Urbanism and cities are probably slightly overrepresented on Cureditor, but that’s the price you pay for subjectivity. It’s long been an interest of mine and I believe it to be one of the most advanced and sophisticated areas of online publishing in culture journalism. More than most topics, urbanist and architectural writing tends to get the combination of research and accessible writing spot on. I think it’s because most people have strong opinions on cities, they feel as though they themselves are an intrinsic part of its makeup. This leads to journalism that trickles down from academia written for enthusiasts, or writing that trickles up from enthusiasts that often informs academics. It’s this openness of dialogues that fascinates me and makes for superb articles. Enjoy the pick of this year’s recommendations.
